Macular Degeneration | Innova ocular
What is macular degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that affects 20% of people over the age of 50. This vision problem consists of a deterioration of the macula, the most sensitive area of the retina, which is responsible for a person's visual acuity.
Early diagnosis is important because, although there is no cure for AMD, there are treatments that have proved to be effective at slowing the progression of the disease.
Symptoms
Macular degeneration causes different symptoms in each person. It may not be noticeable early on in the disease, especially when the degeneration occurs in one eye while the other eye remains healthy for a long time. Rapid loss of central vision is a common symptom that the person has macular degeneration in both eyes.
We can find signs of this disease in everyday life, such as straight lines seeming distorted, blurry words, problems seeing details, and dark or missing areas of central vision.
