Presbyopia

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia, or eyestrain, is a vision problem that consists of difficulty focusing properly on close objects such as a book, mobile phone, restaurant menu, etc. as a consequence of age. It usually begins around the age of 40-45 and is a natural physiological alteration rather than a disease.

The eye has a muscle called the ciliary muscle which controls accommodation of the lens for viewing near images clearly. Like all muscles in the body, over time the ciliary muscle loses elasticity and with it the ability to focus the lens and see close-up./p>

Symptoms

Presbyopia or eyestrain is detected because nearby objects look out of focus; text needs to be held further away when reading and brighter light is needed.
